Arrival

 

The region is mostly accessible by road, but you can also charter flights to the Maria Montez International Airport (BRX) or to the heliport CaboRojo (CBJ) in Pedernales. Barahona is located about two and a half hour away from the capital SantoDomingo. The road is generally very good. 

 

Transport

 

The public transport in Barahona consists of minibuses, taxis (conchos) and the so-called Motoconchos, motorcycle taxis (for security reasons this is not recommended).

 

Most of the sights are far apart, so it is particularly helpful to have a private vehicle. 

 

The tourist taxis are a good alternative, the drivers have an excellent knowledge of the area and they offer a recognized service. 

 

TIP:  For this long trip it is worth it to borrow a car, as you are more flexible and the connections from one village to another are not always easy.

So you can reach all the destinations that you want to see without problems. The journey is long, but worth it.

The landscape is impressive and still there isn’t any tourism there.

Las Caritas 

 

Archaeological sitein the northof LakeEnriquillos.

Barahona 

Barahona – Pedernales, located on the southwest coast of the island, is the region with the greatest biological diversity and also the zone with the lowest tourism development.

 

Visitors to this region are predominately locals or international travelers who want to experience a great natural feeling.


Due to its natural beauty is this area considered as a unique ecotourism destination.

 

It has the biggest inland lake in the Caribbean, the Lago Enriquillo. A Panorama road with spectacula rviews of the coast; a mountain resting place with the unique view of a large geological sink and dry forests with Cacti, just minutes away from the cool climate of the pine forests.

The region is alsoone of the biggestfruitproducers in the country. 

Panoramic coastal road  Barahona - Enriquillo

 

This route connects many small hotels that are easy to reach in the south of Barahona.

 

This is probably the most spectacular panoramic route of the Caribbean overlooking the sea,the lush greenery of the dense forests and the crystal-clear rivers that flow down from the mountains. In the surrounding area you can see the simple lifestyle of the people who are quick to greet visitors. 

 

It is an ever green landscape, complemented by countless butterflies and by a continuous bird song. On the route  lie the beaches Quemaito, and Rafael and LosPatos, with river bathing pools,that are caused by the mountain waters flowing down.

Lago Enriquillo 

 

The biggest inland lake in the Caribbean with an area of ​​about 265 square kilometers.
 
It marks the lowest point of the archipelago with approximately 40 meters below sea level.

 
Its name honors the brave Indian rebels Enriquillo, he was  the first who occuredwith success against the Spanish colonizers, who conquered the island.

The high salt content of this geographical phenomenon has created a seemingly inhospitable habitat for humans, but the perfect hideaway for

lazy American crocodiles, friendly iguanas and graceful pink flamingos.

The  Lagoon of Oviedo

 

To visit the lagoon, which is known as one of the most bird-watching sites in the Caribbean, you need at least half a day.

 

 With an area of ​​27 km2, it consists of 24 stone islands with mangroves where Iguana colonies and endemic migratory birds live.
 
It is recommended to coordinate the departure time for this boat trip in the early morning hours the day before.

 

 


 

 

The trough of Pelempito

 

Many surprises await visitors on the route Oviedo - Pedernales through the dry forests with their blooming cacti. 

 

Once you get in to the north in the Sierra de Bahoruco, the cacti are replaced by pine forests in less than half an hour at an altitude of over 2,000 meters. 

 

The government established in Pelempito a rest stop at an altitude of 1,165 meters a, where various walking routes gointo the mountains.

 

In the valley of the geographic trough is a forest that is surrounded by up to 1,800 meters high terrain.

Cabo Rojo

 

A white sandy beach in the direction of Pedernales, about a kilometer from Bahía de las Águilas away. The improve dair strip is literally next to the beach. 

 

The National Park Jaragua

 

Its name honors the Indian chief, who commanded the area around the time of the arrival of the Spanish colonists.
 
This park covers more than1,374 km2 and includes some of the best beaches in the Caribbean, and the small islands of Beata and Alto Velo. 

 

You can reach this area from Enriquillo, where the road takes a turn inland towards the west. 

Bahía de las Águilas

 

can be reached by boat or with a jeep on amountain side.
 
This area is a contrast to the abundant vegetation of the Sierra de Bahoruco, although both are inside of the National Park Jaragua.

 

 TIP: It is recommended to visit this beach in the afternoon to avoid the strong midday sun.
 
The beach of Bahia de las Aguilas surprises with its crystal clear water..

 

On this white sand beaches, there are no palm trees or coconut trees, where turtles between calm waters and dry forest lay their eggs, an example of flora and fauna as it existed before the Spanish colonization.
 
This beachis part of theBiosphere Reserve Jaragua-Bahoruco-Enriquillo which was recognized by UNESCO as such in November 2002.

El Cachote

 

About an hour away from the village of Paraíso, lies the small village  El Cachote

on the hill which attracts lovers of ecotourism through its wild path tandcloud forest.


The trails allow the observation of a variety of exotic birds and tropical flora; worth mentioning are the bromeliads and wild orchids, as well as the crystal clear mineral springs which are the perfect for swimming.

Shopping

 

Barahona is a city that has only recently entered the tourist boom, the shops are limited to the demand of the local population, apart from the Larimar workshops and shops in the hotels. Nightlife

 

There are some night clubs where predominantly Latin American and Dominican music is played, as well as several beer houses in the cities of Barahona and Pedernales. The city of Pedernales

 

Pedernales is 1 hour from Barahona, right on the border with Haiti and in close proximity to the National Park Jaragua.
